Great price for a great TV

We haven’t had this TV long yet, but upgrading from a 2018 55” Sony OLED, I’m impressed. The picture quality is great, the startup time is vastly improved and the smart feature set is quite rich. The disappointing thing is the sound. My previous Sony would use the TV panel itself as a speaker, and it was a perfectly serviceable speaker until we could get a good soundbar. We now have a great Bose soundbar, but when testing the sound from the TV I was quite disappointed, about on par with other TV’s now. Other than that, not much to say - no complaints!

This TV is fantastic and The Good Guys were excellent.

Sony OLEDs are the best. Got a great price, next day delivery and sales assistant was knowledgeable and efficient.

    Excellent TV

We purchased the 83 inch same model and it is brillant so decided when my second TV stopped working we invested in the same brand and model but in 65". It was a little more expensive than some other brands but wanted to stay with what we knew was a good sound and picture.

Great TV, not quite as expected

This TV is quite a leap past my last TV, the resolution is fantastic, and the software (Google TV) quite good and easy to setup (albeit, would happily do without the promotions of paid content). Integrates very well with my prior Fetch TV box as well. One caveat: I was expecting to be able to set this up to be able to record direct TV, and to be able to pause and fast forward, and was informed at Good Guys that this was the case, would just need to plug in a hard drive to facilitate. However after several days of googling and experimentation, turns out this model does not in fact support this.

At a glance

The Sony 65-inch BRAVIA 8 is a premium OLED Google TV built for people who want cinematic picture quality, easy streaming and a polished smart TV experience in a mid-to-large living room. It is especially strong for movies, general TV and stylish wall-mounted setups. The main trade-off is that OLED may not be the best fit for buyers who prioritise the brightest possible image in very sunlit spaces.

Things to consider

If your room gets a lot of direct daylight all day, a brighter specialist LED alternative may suit better than OLED.

Large room suitability

9/10 - The 65-inch screen size works very well in medium-to-large living rooms and open-plan spaces.

Home theatre friendliness

9/10 - OLED contrast and Sony’s cinema-focused picture style make it a strong choice for dark-room movie viewing.

Smart tv feature score

9/10 - Google TV offers broad app support, simple navigation and easy content discovery.

Gaming suitability

8/10 - A strong pick for console gaming thanks to responsive, gaming-friendly features, though some buyers may prefer specialist gaming-focused alternatives.

Wall mount compatibility

Well suited to wall mounting thanks to its slim, premium-profile design.

Key benefits

  • OLED display: Delivers deep blacks and strong contrast for more cinematic movie and TV viewing.
  • Google TV platform: Keeps streaming apps, recommendations and voice search in one familiar interface.
  • Sony picture processing: Helps scenes look more natural and refined, especially with films and premium streaming content.
  • Cinema-focused tuning: Gives movies a more immersive, theatre-like feel with rich shadow detail and realistic colour.
  • Console-friendly gaming features: Supports a smoother, more responsive gaming experience for compatible consoles.
  • Slim premium design: Looks clean and modern on furniture or when wall mounted in a contemporary room.
  • Large 65-inch screen: Suits bigger lounge rooms and creates a more enveloping viewing experience from typical sofa distances.
  • Smart voice control support: Makes it easier to search content, open apps and control playback with less remote use.

Q: Is the Sony 65-inch BRAVIA 8 a good choice for bright rooms?

A: Yes, it can suit a bright lounge room, but OLED still looks best with some control over direct sunlight. The BRAVIA 8 delivers excellent contrast and reflections are handled well, though a bright Mini LED can look punchier in sun-filled rooms.

Q: How many HDMI 2.1 ports does the Sony K65XR80 have for PS5 or Xbox Series X?

A: The K65XR80 has 2 HDMI 2.1 ports for features such as 4K at 120Hz, VRR and ALLM. That is enough for a current console and one other high-bandwidth device, but it can be limiting if multiple next-gen devices stay connected.

Q: Can the BRAVIA 8 be used as a centre speaker with a compatible Sony soundbar or receiver?

A: Yes, this model supports Sony Acoustic Centre Sync with compatible Sony audio gear, letting the TV help anchor dialogue to the screen. It only works with supported Sony products, so it is not a universal centre-speaker option for every setup.

Q: Does the Sony BRAVIA 8 support Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos for streaming apps?

A: Yes, the BRAVIA 8 supports Dolby Vision HDR and Dolby Atmos from compatible apps and content. You will still need the right streaming plan and title availability, and the most immersive Atmos effect usually comes from adding a soundbar or speaker system.

Q: When did the Sony BRAVIA 8 65-inch OLED come out?

A: The BRAVIA 8 is part of Sony's 2024 TV range. That makes it a newer OLED generation than Sony's 2023 models, with current Google TV software, PS5-friendly gaming features and updated picture processing for this model year.

Q: What does the Sony BRAVIA 8 do better than a basic 4K TV?

A: The key difference is OLED picture quality and Sony's XR processing. On the BRAVIA 8, blacks look truly dark and contrast stays precise scene by scene, which is more noticeable for movies and night viewing than on a standard entry-level 4K LED TV.
